Safety and Health at Work - Reporting Year 2018 - Report on Accident Prevention at Work

(in German)

The report "Safety and Health at Work - Reporting Year 2018", provided by the Federal Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (BAuA) on behalf of the Federal Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs (BMAS), gives an overview of various workplace-related data on accidents at work, occupational diseases, retirement, incapacity for work and working conditions.

This year’s main focus explains the interface between occupational safety and health and REACH in terms of the limit values that relate to the workplace and the convergence of both areas at the European level.

In 2018, the number of employed persons continued to increase (+0.6%) and reached a new high with 41.9 million people. At the same time, the total population shrunk (by -0.2% to a total of 81.6 million).

The figures on notifiable accidents at work (949,309; -0.6%) and fatal accidents at work (541; -4.1%) in 2018 were somewhat lower in comparison with the previous year. At 24.2, the accident quota for notifiable accidents at work per 1,000 full-time workers is higher than the previous year’s figure. This is largely attributable to a change in the recording of the working hours and therefore in the numbers of full-time workers.

As regards occupational diseases, the number of reports of suspected occupational diseases in 2018 was higher than in the previous year (82,622; +3.6%). This increase (+0.5%; +425) is partially attributable to the inclusion of new occupational diseases in the Ordinance on Occupational Diseases (Berufskrankheiten-Verordnung) and the expansion of existing occupational diseases to include additional notifiable illnesses in 2017.

It should be noted that the duplication and distribution of the figures is only permitted with reference to sources. In the case of use for publications of all kinds (book contributions, articles, but also lectures), this report must always be labeled "BMAS / BAuA (2020): Safety and Health at Work - Reporting Year 2018.
