The 5th German REACH Congress took place on 21 and 22 April 2021, as a hybrid conference with a broadcast venue in the Steel Hall of the German Occupational Safety and Health Exhibition (DASA) in Dortmund. The congress was organised by the Federal Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (BAuA) under the auspices and with funding from the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU). The presentations and background materials of the conference are available for download on the BAuA website.

Due to the hybrid nature and the simultaneous translation of the conference, more interested parties from non-German-speaking countries were able to attend this year: A total of over 1000 people from Germany, the EU and non-EU countries followed the live stream of the congress and contributed to the discussions with questions and comments via an online tool.

The 5th German REACH Congress focused on REACH and occupational health and safety. In addition, the goals and planned measures of the European Chemicals Strategy for Sustainability took a prominent position in many presentations and discussions. The programme began with an introductory session on the current political framework at EU level, in which the Chemicals Strategy for Sustainability and the review of the REACH Regulation were presented and discussed in relation to occupational safety and health. This was followed by three sessions in which REACH procedures were discussed in terms of their impact on occupational health and safety: communication in the supply chain, the authorisation procedure, and the restriction procedure. In another session, aspects of the (joint) enforcement of the requirements from occupational health and safety and chemicals legislation were presented. The congress ended with an outlook on planned activities in Germany and at EU level (new framework for occupational safety and health).
