Task-based application of modern interaction concepts for communication between control room operators and field workers

In this report research work and results of partial project 2.3 of project F 2359 "Optimized Workload in Process Control Centers Utilizing Modern ICT Equipment" are presented. The project dealt with strain-optimized work design in control rooms when applying modern information and communication technologies. Project 2.3 focused on the usage of modern, mobile information and communication technologies (ICT) for the communication between control room operators and field workers in the plant. Mobile ICT enable digitalized processes and increase free motion in the plant in expectation of an effective and efficient information exchange amongst the members of the locally distributed teams. Within this project field research was conducted in order to examine the application of novel, mobile ICT and its impact on communication processes, tasks and workload. It was also investigated how usable the respective hard- and software is. Subsequently, in-depth interviews were conducted with control rooms planning to introduce novel, mobile ICT in the near future, addressing their requirements regarding the new technology and their anticipated challenges during this change process. Based on the results of a literature review and the research results, recommendations for interaction concept design were derived and a checklist supporting the introduction and assessment of mobile ICT was prepared. The recommendations and the checklist comprise the topics basic conditions, general organization, hardware, software development, and work organization.
