The "Study on Mental Health at Work" (S-MGA) focuses on the relationship between working conditions, mental health and functioning. The study, which is designed as a panel survey, collects longitudinal information on working and employment conditions, positive and negative indicators of mental health as well as work and functional ability, supplemented by information on personal factors, socio-economic status and the household context. The study is being conducted by the Federal Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (BAuA) in cooperation with the Institute for Employment Research (IAB).

The first wave of the panel study took place in 2011/2012 among 4,511 employees subject to social security contributions. In the second wave in 2017, 2,637 people were successfully re-interviewed. Data collection in both waves was carried out by the infas Institute for Applied Social Sciences using computer-assisted face-to-face interviews (CAPI), supplemented by paper-and-pencil questionnaires for self-completion (PAPI).

The data of the first two waves of the S-MGA are available in integrated form as a Scientific Use File (SUF) for users for scientific research projects. Access to the data is provided by the Research Data Centre of the Federal Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (FDZ-BAuA). This data documentation informs about the collection, preparation and anonymization of the data and describes the variables in the data set.
