Lasers are an integral part of today’s world. Since the experimental development of the first laser by the American physicist Theodore Maiman in 1960, they have become over the last sixty years significant and often indispensable devices - in research and medicine, in industry and commerce, in information and communication technology, and not least in the entertainment industry. The number of employees who work with lasers is constantly increasing. There are also ever more lasers in the consumer sector, where laser printers, CD and DVD players have already been used for years. Laser range finders and laser levels are now part of the basic equipment of many do-it-yourselfers, while laser pointers can be found in plenty of school bags and are, unfortunately, not always used just as a modern version of the pointer. As laser applications become more widespread, it is increasingly important for both employees and consumers to be comprehensively informed about the safe use of lasers.

Apart from general information on laser radiation and its effects on humans, this brochure also explains the currently valid laser classification. This classification provides employers and users with important guidance about possible hazards and the protective measures. Furthermore, a number of research projects initiated by the Federal Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (Bundesanstalt für Arbeitsschutz und Arbeitsmedizin, BAuA) on the safe use of lasers are discussed. These projects are intended to help improve the safety and health of employees who have to use lasers at their workplaces.
