Establishment of a PCR-based detection system of Staphylococcus aureus in bioaerosol samples of pig fattening units

(in German)

One of the biggest occupational risks of people employed in industrial livestock farming can be found in the exposure to airborne microorganisms as a part of livestock associated bioaerosols. In this context Staphylococcus aureus is becoming increasingly important. So far, a quick quantification of bacterial genera or species based on cultivation-dependent methods is time-consuming and staff-intensive because the consisting cultivation-based methods generally require an isolation and a confirmation (identification) of the target bacteria that have been expanded within the quantification process. In the course of the work presented here a highly specific and sensitive PCR-based system (PCR: polymerase chain reaction) was established to detect exposures to S. aureus and to accomplish an improvement in the individual-related prevention of diseases caused by biological agents.
