AI-based systems in healthcare - workshop talks for the development of a multidisciplinary and on general interest oriented design approach from OSH-perspective

  • Project number: F 2574
  • Institution: Federal Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (BAuA)
  • Status: Completed Project

Description:

Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based technologies in healthcare have the potential to fundamentally alter existing work systems. From the perspective of occupational safety and health, it is crucial that AI-supported work systems and tasks are designed to be safe and human-centered. The challenge lies not only in maximizing technical capabilities but also in prioritizing human interests from the outset of system development.

The project engaged in two successive dialogues with experts and stakeholders to collaboratively identify points of intervention for human-centered design of AI-based systems in healthcare from a multidisciplinary perspective, and to develop suitable implementation strategies.

The process and outcomes will be published in an article. Further, additional initiatives are developed, for example preparations of publications on creating a "package insert" for AI applications and on the use of "sandboxes" for AI applications as well as the development of a checklist on the impacts of technology implementation on stressors and resources for operational use. In addition, a conference will be initiated on the topic of evaluation tools for AI applications with the aim of further developing existing tools.
