AI-based systems in healthcare - workshop talks for the development of a multidisciplinary and on general interest oriented design approach from OSH-perspective

  • Project number: F 2574
  • Institution: Federal Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (BAuA)
  • Status: Ongoing Project
  • Planned end: 2024-07-31

Description:

Artificial intelligence (AI)-assisted technologies have the potential to mimic human capabilities, such as making complex decisions on the basis of a wide range of information. As a result, such technologies can have a profound impact on the work system - for example, by performing tasks that were hitherto assigned to employees or by changing work structures.

From the perspective of occupational health and safety, this raises fundamental questions concerning the safe and humane design of AI-supported or -assisted work systems and tasks. One challenge is to reconcile the development process with public interests and work design criteria. The research project, which exemplarily focuses on the health care sector, addresses the question how such a development process could be constituted.

More particularly, the project explores from a multidisciplinary perspective (on the basis of several workshop talks) which approaches and concepts may support a development process of AI-based technologies that allows for an integration of psychological and ethical criteria. The results will be published as a technical paper by the participants of the focus groups.
