Human-centered Technologies for a Safer and Greener European Construction Industry (HumanTech)

  • Project number: F 2557
  • Institution: Federal Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (BAuA)
  • Status: Ongoing Project
  • Planned end: 2025-05-31

Description:

The European construction industry faces three major challenges: to improve its productivity, increase the safety and wellbeing of its workforce and make a shift towards a green, resource efficient industry.

To address these challenges adequately, HumanTech proposes a human-centered approach, involving new technologies such as wearable devices e.g. exoskeletons or smart glasses as well as intelligent robot technology to improve working conditions and worksafety. The technologies are intended to support employees in their tasks and enable more efficient construction methods. In particular, the interaction between humans and robots is to be improved. The aim of the project is to achieve major advances beyond the current state of the art in all these technologies, and to improve safety and health in working environments.

The main task of BAuA within the project is to evaluate the technologies in the context of occupational safety and health. First, accompanying surveys are planned to determine stress and strain as well as perceived interaction quality. In addition, analyses at real workplaces will be carried out to put forth practical results. The aim is to ensure that the technology developed in the project improves the quality of work at construction sites.

This project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon Europe research and innovation programme under grant agreement N° 101058236.
