Working from home and mobile working: Ensuring safety and health holistically

  • Project number: F 2519
  • Institution: Federal Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (BAuA)
  • Status: Completed Project

Description:

Even before the corona pandemic, almost one-third of German employees worked at home at least occasionally as well as from other places outside the employer's premises. Furthermore, during the last few years a "right to work from home" or a "right to mobile working" became relevant in the public debate. Initial studies indicate that working from home and mobile working allow many employees to improve their work-life balance. On the other hand, working from home and mobile working are also associated with the risk of blurring boundaries between work and private lives.

For several years now, the Federal Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (Bundesanstalt für Arbeitsschutz und Arbeitsmedizin, BAuA) has gained knowledge about good ways of designing working from home and mobile working. In the process, the research conducted related to working time organisation as well as the ergonomic design of the workplace at home or the information and communication technologies used for mobile working. Difficulties of occupational safety and health approaches in working from home or mobile working have also highlighted.

This project gathered findings from several BAuA units and departments regarding the various forms of working from home and mobile working. The resulting findings and recommendations on how mobile working can be designed and managed healthily are summarised on the webpage “Mobile Work”.
