Working time reporting for Germany: Implementation of the BAuA-Working Time Surveys 2021, 2023, and 2025

  • Project number: F 2508
  • Institution: Federal Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (BAuA)
  • Status: Ongoing Project
  • Planned end: 2027-12-21

Description:

The project addresses the continuation of the BAuA-working time survey as a panel survey with a two-year interval, monitoring activities in the field of working time and the provision of the datasets for the scientific community.

The organisation of working time is a central issue of occupational health and safety. It not only measures the duration of stress and exposure during the working day, but in particular determines how much time remains for recovery and private commitments. The data from the BAuA-Working Time Survey provide information about the working time reality of employees and the flexibility of working times. In addition, it can be used for scientific research concerning the relationship among working time, as well as the health and well-being of employees.

Participants of the BAuA-working time survey are employees in Germany that engage in gainful employment for at least 10 hours per week and persons that were interviewed during previous survey waves. During computer-assisted telephone interviews participants give information about their employment situation, aspects of their working time, other working conditions, health, and well-being. Within the fourth wave of the BAuA-working time survey in 2021, approx. 20000 employees are interviewed.

The BAuA working time survey systematically observes and records changes and trends in working time organisation and analyses their consequences for occupational health and safety. The data of the different waves are published in reports and made available to the public and scientific community through presentations at conferences. Moreover, they build the foundation for further scientific studies. The results provide answers to the question of how the organisation of working time is associated with work-life balance and the health and well-being of employees. In addition, they provide an empirical basis for objectifying current social and political debates as well as the operational organization of working times.
