Influence of circadian rhythms on safety at work

  • Project number: F 2394
  • Institution: Federal Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (BAuA) / N.N.
  • Status: Completed Project

Description:

In two subprojects the influence of circadian rhythms on safety at work will be examined. In a retrospective analysis, accident data will be analyzed for possible artifacts of circadian rhythms. Histograms will be generated from daytime dependent accident frequency. These histograms will be compared to curves of circadian rhythms.

As part of a laboratory study desynchronization of the internal body clock of participants will be induced by special light interventions. The impact of these interventions on the circadian system will be quantified using safety-related behavioral outcomes of a computer task battery. Furthermore shifts of circadian clock will be measured by dim-light-melatonin onset. The study addresses the phenomenon of biological darkness/lack of light and its relevance for occupational safety and health. The laboratory test was not carried out.
