Method for the identification of granular biopersistent dusts at workplaces

  • Project number: F 2336
  • Institution: Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft zur Förderung der Angewandten Forschung e.V., Institut für Toxikologie und Experimentelle Medizin (ITEM) / Federal Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (BAuA)
  • Status: Completed Project

Description:

In 2011 The Senate Commission for the Investigation of Health Hazards of Chemical Compounds in the Work Area of the German Research Foundation proposed a general dust limit value for the respiratory fraction of granular biopersistent dusts (GBS) of 0,3 mg/m³. This proposal is currently examined by the Committee on Hazardous Substances (AGS) with respect to its inclusion in the Technical Rule for Hazardous Substances 900 (TRGS 900). For this implementation it is important to know for which dust material (chemical composition) this exposure limit applies. It covers granular biopersistent dusts with a low and non-specific toxicity. In order to assess occupational dusts experimental investigations are needed to determine the biopersistence and to exclude a specific toxicity like that of quartz. Of special importance are those dusts that show a low but remaining solubility in the lung.

The aim of the project is to examine several dusts concerning their properties as granular biopersistent dusts (GBS). In addition the reliability of in vitro-methods is examined.
