Relationship between work and the occurrence of hip osteoarthritis (coxarthrosis)

  • Project number: F 2334
  • Institution: Federal Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (BAuA) / Martin-Luther-Universität Halle, Institut für Medizinische Epidemiologie, Biometrie und Informatik
  • Status: Completed Project

Description:

The osteoarthritis of the hip (coxarthrosis, diagnosis M6 according to ICD-10) is a chronic, progressive degenerative disease of the hip joint. The spectrum of causes of coxarthrosis is wide. The primary coxarthrosis may be related to to constitutional or endocrine factors, or also by high occupational biomechanical loads. A search of the available reviews about occupational risks in the etiology of hip osteoarthritis (Euler et al 2012) shows a moderate to strong evidence for an association between the development of a coxarthrosis and work-related physical strains (manual handling, agricultural activities). Euler et al. pointed out as a major deficit that a systematic review of all studies involving recent publications is missing. Quantitative information (meta-analyzes) for general risk, the dose-response relationship and the time course between occupational risks and the occurrence of coxarthrosis are also not considered. The aim of the project is therefore, to obtain evidence from the available scientific studies and publications about the relation between occupational demands (particularly high physical demands) and the development of the osteoarthritis of the hip joint (coxarthrosis) in the context of a systematic review.
