Assessment of mobbing (bullying/harrassment) - a construct validation

  • Project number: F 2128
  • Institution: Freie Universität Berlin
  • Status: Completed Project

Description:

Experts in working environment, justice, and health are often challenged by recognition and differentiation of bullying/harrassment (german: mobbing) at the workplace and in legal procedures. A low concordance regarding the definition of mobbing, shortcommings in psychometrics, and poor classification are strong arguments for the development of measurement models which provide the basis for inferences according to latent (mobbing-) classes or latent traits. From this perspective it is essential to check current operational definitions and assessment procedures by means of scaling methods and psychometrics. The project's aims are to provide:

  • an overview regarding theories of mobbing (bullying/harrassment) and empirical findings
  • a description of differences between mobbing, stress, and conflict
  • a theoretical enbedding of the construct, deduction of hypotheses
  • empirical findings regarding antecedents, enabling factors and consequences of mobbing at the level of organizations
  • a latent-class or latent-trait analysis of indicators of mobbing
  • an inconclusion of information from external observers
  • the control of important confounders (e.g. negative affectivity).

The results should give evidence for the identification of harmful working conditions with a risk of mobbing. The assessment and classification of mobbing cases should be improved. The information can be used for recommendations in occupational practice and for the solution of internal conflicts at the workplace.
