Committee on Biological Agents (ABAS)

The German Federal Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs consults the Committee on Biological Agents on all aspects of occupational safety and health. Pursuant to section 19 of the Biological Agents Ordinance, the Federal Institute for Occupational Safety and Health conducts the business of the Committee.

Since 1995, the Committee on Biological Agents advises the Federal Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs (BMAS) on matters relating to occupational safety and health for activities involving biological agents (microorganisms in the widest sense). Section 19 of the Biological Agents Ordinance forms the legal basis of this arrangement.

The ABAS was appointed for a new period from 2019 to 2025. It has 15 members and deputies, acting in honorary capacities.

Members from the following groups belong to the ABAS:

  • public and private employers,
  • trade unions/employees,
  • state authorities,
  • statutory accident insurers and
  • science/experts.

Each member has a deputy. The expert members of employers, trade unions and supervisory services are proposed by their leading associations, the scientific experts are designated by the BMAS. Institutions and bodies with points of contact are informed about the committees work.
