Topical focal points of Section 4.I.1 "Hazardous Substances in Occupational Safety and Health, CLP Coordination" are the following:
- Further development of and advice on issues in national and European legislation and regulations on activities involving hazardous substances (legal area of occupational health and safety regulations).
- Coordination of CLP and UN GHS, policy advice, further development of the UN GHS and thus the CLP Regulation
- Promotion of the use of substances, mixtures, chemical products, incl. materials, and processes with low health risks by promoting substitution, the SUBSPORTplus web portal and by helping to shape and develop requirements for safe substances, chemical products or processes for sustainable development in chemistry (focus on occupational health and safety)
- Contributions to the national, European and international harmonisation of occupational safety and health standards for a common high level of occupational safety and health
- Development, processing and consultation on topics of risk assessment and protective measures for activities involving hazardous substances
- Further development and transfer of the Simple Measures Concept for Hazardous Substances (EMKG)
- Participation in OECD committees and European projects for the systematic development of harmonised test methods for use in chemical and occupational health and safety regulations
- Organisation of the award of the German Hazardous Substances Protection Prize
The secretariat of the Committee on Hazardous Substances is located in Group 4.I.1. Another topical focal point is participation in subcommittees of the Committee on Hazardous Substances, especially working on fundamental technical rules and concepts such as occupational safety and health measures for activities with carcinogenic hazardous substances.
On the subject of Classification, Labelling and Packaging of Hazardous Substances (CLP), Group 4.I.1 participates in the committees for further development of the regulations on hazard classes and hazardous substance information. The coordination of CLP and the UN Globally Harmonised System of Classification and Labelling (UN GHS) also includes the participation and leadership of the German delegation to the UN GHS Sub-Committee of Experts. The UN GHS is implemented in the EU with the CLP Regulation based on the Building Block Principle.
