Unit 1.6 Federal Office for Occupational Safety and Health (OSH)

On January 1, 2021, extensive changes to the Occupational Health and Safety Act entered into force. They impose a binding, uniform requirement on the occupational safety and health authorities of the federal states to carry out on-site inspections of at least five per cent of all organisations within their jurisdiction each year. The Federal Office for Occupational Safety and Health established within the Federal Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (Bundesanstalt für Arbeitsschutz und Arbeitsmedizin, BAuA) evaluates and monitors the implementation of this nationwide minimum rate.

To this end, the Federal Office for Occupational Safety and Health is setting up a national monitoring system and evaluating compliance with the statutorily anchored on-site inspection rate. In order to do this, the Federal Office will compile the necessary data from the federal states in a database. Furthermore, this database will allow the Federal Office to supply the federal government with the needed information regarding its obligations to report on safety and health issues to Germany's national parliament and international institutions/organisations.
